On November 10, 2011, we hosted a CEO/CIO Dialogue covering  Closing the Communication Gap

The promise of IT is to provide the organization with a competitive advantage through the effective implementation of information technology.  CEO Ford Kyes and CIO and leading healthcare IT Consultant, Lindsey Jarrell discussed  the challenges faced by many organizations as they work to deliver on that promise.  Insights into lessons learned by these two professionals as they implemented a nationally recognized EMR project for one of the largest healthcare organizations in the US were provided.  The differences in CEO and CIO perspectives, the reasons behind them and how to resolve them; IT related issues relevant to all companies, such as project origination and justification, infrastructure, vendor selection and security were presented.  Click here for a synopsis of their presentation.

During our meeting on August 11, 2011, we held an interactive discussion for senior business leaders on the topic, "Getting Organizational Results with Mobile Devices".  Panel members Hiep Nguyen (CIO City of Winter Haven),  John Just (CIO Pinellas County School District), and Andy Swenson (VP of IT for Vology Data Systems) discussed: 

- Using mobile devices in a municipality.

- Using mobile devices in a school district.

- Using mobile devices in private industry.

 

On May 12, 2011, we hosted an interactive discussion with Jose Eiras for senior business leaders on the topic, IT Cost Effectiveness & Cost Reduction  .  In his newly published book The Practical CIO: A Common Sense Guide for Successful IT Leadership, Mr. Eiras outlines a strategic approach for cost reduction and cost effectiveness in IT.  While citing abundant case examples from leading global enterprises such as Microsoft, Prudential, Citigroup, Chiquita Brands, Smithfield Foods and West Marine, Mr. Eiras provides advice for modern executives competing in a challenging global environment on how to think from the perspective of a CEO.  Key strategies presented in the book were discussed.

 

Explore Cloud Computing We explored the core tenants of “Cloud Computing” and how you can take advantage of this approach to computing to give you a leg up in agility and scalability during our Febuary 10, 2011 meeting.  The session focused on the underlying economics of this approach and the technical components that make up the Microsoft cloud computing solution.

Speaker: Mr. Dan Sandlin, Azure Solution Specialist

Dan Sandlin is an Azure Solution Specialist focused on helping small and midsize companies across the East coast to migrate or build applications on the Microsoft cloud platform.  Mr. Sandlin has worked at Microsoft for over 13 years focusing on application development technologies and infrastructure technologies.   Most recently Dan has moved into the cloud platform group at Microsoft and is focusing on small and medium sized customers across the East coast.  Dan’s experience focuses on helping companies utilize “game changing” technologies to provide a competitive advantage. 

Senior MIS students Adam Lazarus and Nizar Alahmadi as well as Masters student Robert Felton, all from The University of Tampa, assisted Mr. Sandlin.

•“The CIO's Tools For Success” was the presentation on November 11, 2010, where we explored several approaches (such as governance, business process improvement and consolidation) CIO's may use to promote efficiency in their organizations.  Mr. James Buckner, CIO discussed how the City of Tampa has used these tools and how they might fit into other organizations.  He closed by surveying the audience to determine common practices among local organizations.  Melanie Whetzel and Latifa AlMusallam, both senior MIS students at the University of Tampa assisted Mr. Buckner.  

 

•“Choose the Game: 4 Keys to Leading Performance in ANY Situation” was the topic of our meeting on  Thursday, August 12, 2010.  Kathy Potts, Speaker, Executive Coach, and Facilitator from the Oncore Performance Group, was the featured speaker who led a discussion on what leadership can do to keep money from walking out the door in the form of recruiting costs, lost productivity and irreplaceable organizational knowledge. 

 

•“The Practical CIO ” The Practical CIO Breakfast Forum Wednesday, June 9, 2010.  José Carlos Eiras, outlined a strategic approach for cost reduction and cost effectiveness in IT, the topic of his recent book.   Eiras was most recently CIO at DHL Express-US, a division of Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN), the world’s leading logistics and transportation company. Prior to joining DHL, he served as European CIO and Global Services Information Officer at General Motors. He has also held top executive posts at General Foods, Philip Morris, and other multinational corporations. Eiras is a recognized industry expert and respected IT consultant, he has a solid foundation of support in the global IT community.   This was a Special Partner Event held with UT’s Center for Leadership.

 

•“Organizational Project Management” Panel discussion focused on Organizational Project Management.
